Quixel Mixer alternative

Looking for a Quixel Mixer alternative?

Epic Games has discontinued Quixel Mixer: its final, offline-only release gets no further updates or support. PBRpainter is a lightweight, standalone PBR painter for Windows that keeps texturing simple — import a mesh, paint every PBR channel directly on it, apply materials to UV islands and export game-ready textures.

Windows 10/11 · No credit card required for the trial.

Why switch from Quixel Mixer to PBRpainter

Actively developed

Quixel Mixer received its last update in 2026 and has no further support. PBRpainter ships regular updates, with fixes delivered through a built-in update notice.

Paint directly on the model

Paint every PBR channel in one stroke right in the 3D viewport, or on the UV layout — Albedo, Normal, Roughness, Height and Emission together.

Bring your own materials

Load any texture set, including the Megascans you already downloaded, as a per-channel ink material, and reveal it with the brush or apply it to whole UV islands.

Standalone and offline-friendly

No launcher, no engine, no account needed to paint. PBRpainter only goes online to check the license, at most once every 14 days.

Game-ready export

One PNG per channel — albedo, normal, roughness, metallic, height, emission — ready for Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot or Blender.

Affordable

9 €/year for one workstation, no subscription that renews behind your back, and a free 2-month trial to make sure it fits your workflow.

Moving your workflow over

  1. Export your model from your 3D software as FBX, OBJ or glTF and import it in PBRpainter.
  2. Load your favorite texture sets (Megascans surfaces, your own scans…) as ink materials, one image per channel.
  3. Paint them onto the model with the brush, or fill whole UV islands in one keystroke, then add decals.
  4. Export one PNG per channel and plug them into your engine's material.

Frequently asked questions

Is Quixel Mixer discontinued?

Yes. In February 2026, Epic Games released a final, offline-only version of Quixel Mixer (2023.1) and announced that there will be no further updates or product support. Online Megascans libraries are no longer accessible from inside Mixer.

What is a good Quixel Mixer alternative for painting PBR textures?

PBRpainter is a standalone PBR painter for Windows that lets you paint Albedo, Normal, Roughness, Height and Emission directly on your 3D models, apply materials to whole UV islands and export game-ready PNG textures. It is actively developed and comes with a free 2-month trial.

Can I keep using my Megascans or other texture sets?

Yes. Any texture set exported as image files can be loaded as a per-channel "ink" material in PBRpainter: smoothness maps are converted to roughness, and DirectX or OpenGL normal maps can be flipped in one click.

Do I need Unreal Engine, Blender or another host application?

No. PBRpainter is a standalone application: import an FBX, OBJ or glTF model, paint it and export your textures for any engine.

How much does PBRpainter cost?

9 € per year for one workstation, with no auto-renewing subscription. The free 2-month trial unlocks every feature, with no credit card required.
